The 4 Agreements to Happiness

I just finished reading this great book and I had to share it with you. The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom. These amazing teachings from Don Miguel Ruiz are truly a perfect guide to live a happy life. The secret is in applying each one of the agreements to your daily living. The application of these concepts requires daily discipline, commitment, determination and the desire to be congruent in everything we do, say and think.

The Four Agreements are:

1) Be Impeccable with Your Word: Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using words to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love. Use the power of your words to edify and to praise others. Speak of only good things for yourself and others. Talk of happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

2) Don’t’ take anything Personally: Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering. Each person has the right to their own opinion. Don’t allow yourself to be effected by the opinion or actions of others. You have no control over what other people do but you do have control over how you react or respond to it. Find the positive intention in each situation or person. Allow people the space necessary to be themselves. Have patience and YOU will persevere.

3) Don’t make Assumptions: Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life. Nothing is right or wrong. It is only our interpretation. Be willing to see the lesson behind each experience and to change from the inside out. The best antidote to avoid making assumptions is to give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to make assumptions or criticize others.

4) Always do Your Best: Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret. If you always do your best you will not judge yourself or suffer from guilt, blame and self-punishment. Think only of the best, work only for the best and expect only the best. As you do, your best will shine through and you will positively affect many people.

These Four Agreements are very simple, but very profound. To embrace and live each of the Four Agreements is to find yourself experiencing personal freedom–possibly as never before. I invite you to take a look at each one of the agreements and honestly ask yourself where you are in relation to the application of them. Then proceed to make the necessary changes to move to the next level by incorporating and demonstrating each agreement into your life.

Until next time, embrace each of the 4 Agreements to experience personal freedom and continue to discover your full potential and live the life of your dreams!
